ANNA SOMOS x into

ANNA SOMOS x into

Anna and I started working together in September and we approached her with a request to create the Into travel mug collection.

After weeks of discussions and brainstorming, we came up with a concept that combines design, form and functionality.

During the collaboration, Anna let us into her ceramics studio, where we got a behind-the-scenes look at her view of this wonderful profession.

What does ceramics mean to you?

Ceramics contains everything that represents value for me in today's digital environment, and that seems to vanish slowly. My pieces behave like capsules that preserve these eternal values: originality, personal connection, patience, and slowing down. Moreover, they do not only preserve but convey these through their functionality by reminding their owner to slow down and give themselves time to observe the small details and find what is unique in themselves and in their environment.

What kind of materials do you work with?

I work with more techniques: wheel throwing, hand-building, or slip casting. I prefer clean and timeless shapes, pastel colors, and a combination of matt and glossy surfaces.

What kind of objects do you make?

You can find objects for everyday use among the selection, such as mugs, bowls, teapots, or vases, as well as bowls for pets. I believe that pets are part of the family, so they deserve bowls made just for them. Moreover, these objects act as unique and decorative home accessories. Besides these products I’ve created a line of slip-cast porcelain takeaway mugs with silicone tops that allow us to enjoy our coffee or tea on the way while leaving a minimal ecological footprint.

STRIPED TRAVEL MUG

The mugs were carved from clay by Anna and given their final shape in a process called turning.

She painted and coloured the objects in their raw state using a semi-porcelain mass.

And the result could not be more beautiful: a light, creamy white clay mug, coated with a transparent glossy glaze and decorated with green/blue/red stripes, the perfect piece for your morning ritual.
